Historic Tucker’s Grove Camp Meeting to get under way
Three years after the Civil War ended, and an attempt to have an annual joint campmeeting for blacks and whites had failed, blacks in East Lincoln started Tucker’s Grove Camp Meeting.
The historic event gets under way this Friday at the campground on Highway 73 at Beth Haven Church Road, and like Rock Springs that just ended, will feature wonderful music, great preaching and lots of good food and fellowship.
Tucker’s, which includes 100 tents, centers around a tin-roof arbor where worship services are held nightly.
The camp meeting has been held each August since 1868 with the exception of one year in the 1950s when a polio epidemic forced supporters not to hold it that year.
Tucker’s Grove, purchased in 1878 from the widow of William Clay Tucker, a white farmer and landowner, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The campground became the center of a community that later included a church and a school for blacks, who formed the community after some of them moved from their owners’ plantations following emancipation.
