Donald James Root
Donald James Root, 71, of Denver, passed away at his residence on Friday, June 22, 2012.
Born on May 16, 1941 in Monroe County, Michigan, he was the son of the late Robert and Helen Gautz Root.
In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his brother, Richard.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Carol (nee Sack); sons Timothy J. Root and Thomas D. Root (Tammy); four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; brother Gary; and sister, Sharon H. Hazelton.
The family celebrated Donald’s life at the residence on June 24. Memorials in Donald’s memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Lincoln County 107 North Cedar Street Lincolnton, NC 28092 or Holy Spirit RC Church 537 North Highway 16 Denver, NC 28037.

Martha Cherry Gaskill
Martha Cherry Gaskill, 64, of 8394 Unity Church Road in Denver, died on Thursday, June 21, 2012.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 25, 2012 at Unity Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carol Clark officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Gaskill was born July 28, 1947 in Iredell County to the late Harold Harvey and Lockie Jane Howard Cherry. She graduated from Rock Springs High School in 1965 and then attended Plaza School of Beauty Culture. She opened her own salon “Snip-n-Curl” in 1984. She worked as a beautician for 30 years. Mrs. Gaskill drove a school bus and worked in the cafeteria at Rock Springs Elementary School for many years while her children were growing up. She was an active member of Unity Presbyterian Church for 53 years and served as custodian for 30 years. She also volunteered as a beautician for Hospice of Lincoln County. Her hobbies included sewing, shopping, and attending her girls’ and grandchildren’s ballgames.
She is survived by husband of 41 years, James L. Gaskill of the home; four daughters, Kelli Hogue and husband Ken, Rebecca Gaskill; Rachel Gaskill Laurenson; and Jane Pethel and husband Brock, all of Denver; 10 grandchildren, Kiley Jane, Kenton, Kooper, and Katie Lou Hogue; Jimmy Scott; Georgia and Jeb Laurenson; and Emery Jane, Lane, and Greenley Pethel. She is also survived by her brother, Steve Cherry and wife Gailya, their daughters Lana Parrish and husband Jimmy; Allison Horne and husband Dennis, and their families, all of Denver; and nephew Kevin Cherry of Washington D.C.

Rebecca Parrish Pharr
Rebecca Ann Tyner Parrish Pharr, 71, of Denver (formerly of Siler City, NC) died Thursday, June 21, 2012 at her residence surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late James Coryl Tyner and Ruby Pickard Blair. Becky will be remembered for loving her family, her quick wit and never meeting a stranger.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Deanna Tyner Clayton.
She is survived by her husband, Rainer Mack Pharr (Bo); two sons Edward Lee Parrish, Jr. (Deb), and James Clinton Parrish (Lana); seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Cathy Tyner Smithson (Gary) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were June 24 at Denver United Methodist Church. Rev. Tim Killian officiated. Burial followed the service in the church cemetery.
